Chapter Eleven

“Kyle,” Robin whispered. “Is that really you, Kyle?”

“Of course, it’s me,” he said with a smile. “Who else would it be?”

He was bruised and battered, bleeding from various wounds, and yet, he was wholly intact. Robin instantly pulled him into a hug, unable to believe what she was seeing.

“What?” she asked. “How –?”

“The Elders are dead,” Kyle whispered. “When they died, there was chaos all around. I managed to overpower the clerk guarding me and get out of there. When I came out, the Elders were lying dead, the cult was in utter chaos, and you were lying on the floor, barely breathing. You were muttering all these things, and I realized that you were hallucinating. I begged you to come back to me –.”

“I heard you,” she said with a smile. “And I came back to you.”

He looked at her with tears in his eyes and kissed her fervently.

“I love you,” he whispered. “God, I really love you.”

“I love you too,” Robin said, resting her head on his shoulder.

She looked around and saw the cult members all sitting outside their tents, looking into the distance. They all had similar expressions on their face, stoic and frozen. They looked ahead as if seeing something that only they could see.

“They have been sitting like that for half an hour,” Kyle said. “They are starting to creep me out.”

“Yea, me too,” Robin said. “The Elders tried to do some type of ritual to invoke the devil, to convince him to give them powers. They were going to hold a mass suicide – convince them all to drink the poison and sacrifice themselves to the devil. They gave me some hallucinogen – they were probably going to kill me as the final act of the ritual – I don’t know. They had these separate bowls filled with some liquid, but someone had poisoned them. They all died –.”

“Who poisoned them?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Robin said. “Maybe the real leader of the cult. The man who started all this had two wives. He had another child from his second wife, and according to John, that child is the one who rules this place. But I don’t know who it is. I can’t seem to figure it out. I don’t know what to do, Kyle. I just wanted to get out of here, but I couldn’t leave without you. I couldn’t leave you behind; I was afraid of what they might do to you by the time I got back with help or whether you would be even alive by the time I got help.”

Robin took his hands in hers, placing small kisses all over them. Then, she turned them over, kissing his palms before hugging him again.

“Oh, I was so scared, Kyle,” she whispered. “I am still so scared. I thought I had lost you. I thought I was going to go crazy in here. So much bloodshed, so many people dead – I felt like I was going to go insane if I stayed here.
